SINGLE MOM'S BREAKFAST WITH SANTA
Breakfast with Santa is a program to reward single mothers who are working toward self-reliance. Soroptimist of Salt Lake understands the desire of a mother to provide for her children. Single mothers work hard to establish and stay within a budget; however when Christmas comes around, the budget often goes out the window and mothers find themselves in financial debt before they start the New Year.
Breakfast with Santa was created to ensure single mothers get off to a good start in the New Year. The event is held at West High School, usually on the 1st Saturday of December. More than 100 volunteers ages 16+ show up at 7:00 am to help with setting up, getting toys and clothes organized, preparing for the children and their mothers. The volunteers are from churches, friends, family and Soroptimists. All together the volunteer hours total 800 or more for this event.
Qualifications: All mothers must qualify to attend and be invited.
Mother must be in an educational program to become self-reliant. Example: accredited State or private college or technical school
Mother needs to be head of her own household (lives alone with children).
Children must be under 18 and living with their mother.
The moms may only attend one year unless they are in an accredited State, private college or technical school , to increase their earning skills. Since their income won’t increase until they graduate or complete the program, we support them in their education process.
Families must have their own transportation to and from the event.
Purposes: In addition to providing the families with a modest Christmas, the event accomplishes several goals:
Upon arrival, families are served a hot breakfast
The moms get a photograph of their children with Santa
The children get the opportunity to give by choosing and wrapping a gift for their mother.
The children receive warm clothing for winter, specified by the mother on their application.
The moms choose toys for their children.
The event is held the 1st Saturday of December to reduce the mother’s stress levels about how she is going to buy presents. (Christmas is hidden safely away.)
