  Horizonte School Young Parent Program     More Information...
As our main service project, Soroptimist of Salt Lake has developed a service project providing a career and life skills program, presented monthly to complement the Horizonte Young Parent Program targeting youths between 11-18 who are completing their High School Education. We have extended the support and mentoring when students have decided to continue on to college. The program is currently benefiting 80 young parents and children yearly.

  Margaret Embleton Award  More Information
The Salt Lake Club presents this award to a female student attending an at-risk school who shows the most improved citizenship. Teachers nominate the candidates.            

  Jeanne Schneiter Adovonik Award
This award is given in memory of Jeanne Schneiter Adovonik, a Soroptimist member who passed away in 2001. Jeanne's family funds this award in memory of the service Jeanne gave throughout her life to those less fortunate than herself and for the mentoring she so willingly performed for many women. The award is given to assist women heads of households obtain the skills, training and education necessary to improve their employment and economic status for their family. SI of Salt Lake solicits applications and manages the selection of this award. This year's winner...

  Salt Lake Club's International Project - SI Miranda, Venezuela. More Info...
In 2003 SI Salt Lake decided to form an 'International Committee' and adopt a project that they could administer from afar, and where they would be able to see the difference they were making. A project in Baruta, Venezuala was chosen. An active Venezuelan Soroptimist Club SI Miranda, needed funding for an ambitious program designed to help the women and girls of the area receive training on all office procedures, especially basic computer skills. SI Salt Lake City now provides the Computer Instructor's annual salary. The success of this project has been very gratifying, with many students obtaining jobs on graduation.

  "S" Club - Woodland Hills High School
An "S" Club is a group of 15 or more junior or senior high school students (7th through 12th grade) who wish to serve their school and community by working on worthwhile service projects. While of varied interests and talents, "S" Club members are concerned with improving the quality of life for themselves and those around them.

Rocky Mountain Regional Awards

  Governor's Project - Children of Peace (Vietnam Orphanage & School)
Rocky Mountain Region provided funds to build a school in Vietnam for orphan children for Children of Peace International. Children of Peace International is a humanitarian organization which exists to serve the people of Vietnam by developing the capability of the people to help themselves. The school has just been completed and has been furnished.
This biennium the Region is providing scholarships to fund schooling for the orphan children.
Rocky Mountain Region also participates in the Soroptimist International of the Americas and the Soroptimist International Projects.

  Club Vision Award
Awarded to clubs who meet goals set each year by the Governor.

  Spirit of Soroptimist Award
Annual award given to a Soroptimist in each club who exemplifies the Spirit of Soroptimist. Each club selects one member annually who they feel represents the Soroptimist spirit in the club with consideration being given to participation in activities, attendance, length of time in the club, etc.

SI of the Americas (SIA) Foundation Programs

  Disaster Relief Fund
This fund provides grants to clubs and regions for relief work in areas affected by a natural disaster and acts of war. Over the past two years, SIA has distributed over $100,000 in disaster relief funds. Recipients included victims of flooding in the Philippines, and civil unrest in Fiji. The Fund is replenished by club donations. Club and Community Grants may be requested using a grant application available from headquarters.

  Prevention of Domestic Violence Initiatives
SIA has a three part domestic violence program:
Soroptimist Workplace Campaign to End Domestic Violence/Day of Unity - The workplace campaign takes place in October of each year. Its aim is to assist victims of violence, and raise awareness of domestic violence as a workplace issue.
Every Home a Safe Home - This education and resource tool is available to clubs for distribution throughout their communities.
Domestic Violence Grant Initiative - This one time grant funded three $30,000 domestic violence projects that support women in a sensitive and sustainable way. The projects are in the Philippines, Paraguay, and Ecuador.

 
Women's Opportunity AwardsMore Information and How to Apply...
As a worldwide service organization, Soroptimist International of the Americas established the Women’s Opportunity Award to aid mature women who must enter or return to the job market. The Soroptimists recognize that these women need additional skills, training and education to upgrade their employment and become economically independent.

The Women's Opportunity Awards is SIA's major service project. The Salt Lake Club supports women returning the work force by awarding scholarships to two local women each year.

  Making a Difference for Women Award

In every community there are women who work to improve the lives of women and girls. We honor them with our Making a Difference for Women Award, to acknowledge these efforts. An honoree is forwarded to the Region and then a name is sent to SIA. A personal donation is given to the winner from SIA to be donated to her charity. This award has been given every year by our club since the program began.

The Violet Richardson Award--Honoring Young Women for Volunteer Action
More Information and How to Apply...
This award is given to a female student between 14-17 for volunteer action in their community. This student displays commitment to making the world a better place, and has had significant and noteworthy accomplishments as a volunteer.

SI International Projects

  Quadrennial Projects:
Our new Quadrennial Project, Project SIerra: a Family and a Future
, was launched at Convention in July 2007. The project will support women caring for children in extreme poverty and provide a caring secure family home for children who are alone or at risk of abandonment.

  December 10th Presidential Appeal -
The December 10th President’s Appeal will support the Hamlin Fistula Relief and Aid Fund in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Imagine never being able to return home after having a baby. Then imagine finding a home in Village Desta Mender, being cared for, trained for a new life and having your dignity restored. This project will help women with fistulas who cannot be completely cured and need ongoing medical care.

  Project 5-O
Project Five-O was adopted by the Soroptimist International Board of Directors in 1980, and focuses on providing vocational training and employment for women in developing countries and countries in transition, with the goal of alleviating poverty and advancing the status of women. Recent projects have included computer classes for disabled women in Brazil, small business loans in Capetown, South Africa, and basic literacy training in Nepal. Soroptimist International is one of five project partners, which include the International Council of Women, the International Federation of Business and Professional Women, the International Federation of University Women and Zonta International.
