This Year's Winner: Gordana

The family of Jeanne Schneiter Adovnik, a past Soroptimist, awarded $2,000 in her honor, to recipient Gordana Kapetanovic. Gordana is attending Salt Lake Community College to become a Radiology Technician. She and her family emigrated from Bosnia-Herzegovina where there was a horrible war going on. She had many challenges to overcome: coming to a new country, learning to speak English, raising two small children and suffering domestic abuse from a now divorced husband. She completed high school and went on to college and is working as a case manager and interpreter at the Utah Health and Human Rights Project as an advocate for clients, helping them navigate the healthcare and social service systems in Utah. Under UHHRP she suggested a bi-weekly support and education group for refugees that has become very successful.
